Does your employer rate you?
Open to find out
I once had a one-on-one session with an employee who was frustrated and confused by her lack of growth at work.
Her source of frustration was that her line manager resigned, and she was asked to take over her responsibilities while they looked for a replacement.
The search for a replacement went on longer than usual, so she had to continue to execute those higher manager-level responsibilities for a longer period of time.
During this time, her head of department was always hailing her for her performance in the new role. On many occasions, he'd tell her, without prompting, what a fantastic job she was doing.
Naturally, she expected, like every normal person would, that her impressive performances would make her bosses change their minds about looking outside to fill the vacant position and promote her to the job full-time. But won gbe ni handicap
One day, out of the blue, she was told that a new line manager had been hired externally to fill the vacant position she'd been temporarily occupying for a long time. To make matters worse, she was expected to help the new person learn the role.
She was devastated but consoled herself with the hope that her employers will compensate her with something, maybe a promotion. After all, she'd performed herself well in a much higher-level position.
She was in for another shock. No promotion, no tangible salary raise. It gets worse, still. According to her, after that episode, there were a few more instances where her company made her assume higher-level responsibilities, praised her efforts, and then hired someone else for those positions.
This contradiction between her superiors' words and actions left her really confused. Why won’t your words and actions tally?
I advised her to ignore her bosses' words and focus on their actions since that was the true reflection of their perception of her. Their actions proved that they never saw her as a worthy full-time occupant of those higher-level positions. There was something they expected the occupants of those positions to have that they didn't believe she possessed. As long as that remained the case, she was never going to get the promotion she sought.
So, she had a few options:
1. Study the people that were hired for those positions to identify what skills, qualifications, etc. they had that she didn't and strive to acquire them. And if there weren't any relative skills or qualification deficiencies.
2. Apply to a new company since it'd be clear by then that her employers simply didn't rate her for whatever reason. She chose both options. She increased her skills, obtained new qualifications, and now has a better, more rewarding position at a new company.
Lesson: Ultimately, the most accurate measure of your employer's true perception of you is their actions, not words. If they're truly as impressed with you as they say, it'd be reflected in your salary and rank. ISWIS
If your oga is always telling you that you're doing a fantastic job but you're earning peanuts and they always give one excuse or another when you ask for a raise, hmmm.
Them probably nor too rate you like dat. Employers are never too broke to make the employees they genuinely value happy.
You are worth so much more out there. And you definitely deserve to be paid better.

“SEE ME SEE WAHALA”
Everyday at this job, I constantly have to be on my toes. It’s the real no rest for the wicked, but I’m not wicked, nau. So far, I’ve been doing really well, even beyond my expectations. Now my oga has recommended me to my much more senior oga that I can do great work and should partner with him on a project. That’s more pressure that I don’t know if I can take it anymore. At the same time, i’m excited by the prospects of growth. But mehnnnn
MY ADVICE
I think that the fact that you’ve gotten this far means you have something really good to offer. Believe in your abilities, and don’t allow imposter syndrome get to you. I’m sure you’ll ace this new opportunity as well, and everything will go just fine. The truth is, most of us are really just winging it at this corporate thing. Even oga has moments of doubt as well.
