Me to Capitalism
What is it, haven't you done enough?
Hi guys,
In truth, I’m not the strongest soldier in this corporate hulabaloo.
It may seem like with all the advice I dish out every Saturday, I have it all figured out.
This week had me feeling all sorts of ways. A bit used by capitalism. I was questioning my worth and so many other awful feelings.
But I still had to show up here today.
It turns out my parents didn’t raise a kid who was ready to face the cutthroat corporate environment. You are generally left high and dry to figure everything out on your own, the hard way.
What I’m sharing with you today is some unwritten rules of the game and some things that have given me some strength in these past couple of days, so buckle up!
1. Your worth to the company and its people is tied to your last performance rating/evaluation, and I’m not kidding. You are as good as your last month’s appraisal. Even if you were a top performer 5 years in a row, if for whatever reason you did not manage to get a top rating this year, you’re doomed. You don’t do one big thing and relax; you just have to keep going else you become redundant.
2. Promotions are not linked to performance. At best, they are linked to the perception of your performance. What does that even mean? We all view things with our own perceptive lens. My map of the world could be drastically different to your map. Perception is reality. How do you present your wins? It is important that you portray the right perception or even exaggerate your work, dear.
3. When you are the star, most mistakes are forgiven. I have had the privilege to make some lethal mistakes that could have ensured my immediate departure from the company, but they were overlooked because I was delivering results as per management’s perception and expectations. Yet, at the same time, I’ve also seen cases when they are just fishing for mistakes to happen so they can let you kiss your job goodbye. Just try to have good relationships with folks at work. It would help you.
4. There’s a fine line between gaining experience and just being used. Know when to draw that line: Some companies are just out to use you and keep paying peanuts when you are worth clearly more than that. If you have learnt at a company to an extent where you can stand on your two feet, it’s best to leave. They’ll be left to carry all that workload they placed on you when you do.
5. Don’t tie your self-worth to your position and performance in the company. It does feel great when you are the champ, being seen as someone who consistently delivers results. What happens when you are not all of this? And there will be times when you’re not. Broaden your scope of self-worth and take pride in all the other roles you have in life when the going at work gets tough.
I’m still keeping my catchphrase because a little birdie said I should also not gree.
So till my next newsletter, stay employed.
