Today’s gist
I was thinking of what to write to you today. There was no sweet trend to jump on. No politician to drag. Then, I came across Aaron Pierre’s gist, but he’s not your work crush, so it was not a subject of discussion.
I then decided to talk about my attachment issues and how they finally caught up with me at work.
When I was fresh out of school, I got a job. A really nice and creative place. But there came a time (pardon my Shakespearean English, smartness wan wound me) when I had to leave.
My colleagues were very amazing people, and it made me somewhat regretful. I cried a lot during my notice period. My line manager was especially who I felt bad for because he invested so much in me.
But I had to put sentiments aside and do what was best for my long-term goals.
You see, there's a special kind of attachment that comes with helping to build something, whether it's a company, a department, a program, a team, or a process. You pour your heart and soul into it, and it becomes a part of you.
But if you are ever in such a situation, here’s what to remember.
We are not the first or the last to sit in this chair. There were employees before us who shaped the way things are, and there will be others after us who will carry the torch forward. We are a link in the chain, not the whole chain itself.
Be curious about your new rental (new role). Take your learnings and memories with you. Celebrate your success and get prepped for another adventure. Take that leap of faith.
Why have I been saying “rental”? because I believe this concept can be especially relevant in today's ever-changing world. If we can embrace the "rental" mindset, we will be better equipped to navigate sentiments at work.
Keep that balance between workplace attachment and detachment.
