In every workplace, there are people whose job titles don’t match their actual power.
They don’t sit at the top of the org chart, but somehow, decisions pass through them.
They have influence, and more importantly, access.
They are the real powers that be. Babalawos don’t even come close.
So, when you’re new in a workplace, don’t just scan the team structure.
Study the dynamics.
Observe who talks and who listens.
Who everyone waits for before a meeting starts.
Who people laugh with but never joke about.
That’s where the real power lies.
This week, a new colleague of mine made that classic mistake.
She pissed off the wrong person.
Someone who didn’t carry the title of second-in-command but absolutely was.
Not only did this person have experience, she had something even more potent, friendship with the boss.
One small disagreement, and the ‘wrong person’ painted her like a villain.
Told the boss she was rude, entitled, and… “not adding any real value.”
Before she could even defend herself, the damage was done.
The perception was shaped.
And the boss? Well she tried to be diplomatic but what use is that.
The babe cried her eyes out.
Moral of the story?
Every office has a Game of Thrones going on behind the scenes.
Learn the power map before you move your next piece.

Sis couldn’t hide her jealousy o. She started spreading wicked rumors, going around to Samantha’s manager saying things like, “That girl is useless, she doesn’t even take her job seriously.” Can you imagine?
One random day, Samantha came to the office early, like 7 a.m. early (which, mind you, is not even official work hours) just chilling, watching Netflix, minding her business. Next thing, Madam Side Chick carried the matter on her head and ran to HR like “She’s disturbing the peace of the office”
The thing was so funny.
Poor Samantha.
