You Are Not Dumb
You Probably Just Have a Bad Leader
Back in secondary school, I was one of those people who just couldn’t get math. It didn’t matter how many extra lessons I attended; the numbers never seemed to add up for me. My parents did everything. At some point, they even brought a white man to teach me. Maybe they thought the accent would help me understand. It didn’t.
But somehow, I passed WAEC. Not because of the expensive tutors, but because, in my final year, a friend took the time to explain things to me in a way that made sense. Maybe it was her method. Maybe it was the patience in her voice. Maybe she just saw me as someone who could understand math, rather than someone doomed to fail it.
I’ve seen this pattern over and over again in my life. When I started my first job in content, I was bad. Like, really bad. I wrote content so awful that my first boss literally laughed at the attempt during my interview. But she gave me a shot. She didn’t see me as someone who was simply “not good at content.” She saw someone who could be good with the right guidance. And because she believed in me, I got better.
Then came copywriting. I stumbled into it during NYSC, and if I thought I was bad at content, I was hopeless at copy. My scripts were weak, and my ideas were even worse. But again, I had a boss who saw something in me. He didn’t just dismiss me as untalented; he figured out how I learned best and taught me accordingly. He adapted to me, not the other way around. And because of that, I flourished.
Here’s the thing: people are not dumb. A monkey will always look like a failure if you ask it to swim. A fish will always seem useless if you put it on a tree. If you’re struggling with something, maybe it’s not you. Maybe you just need a better leader. Someone who understands that intelligence isn’t one-size-fits-all.
And if you are in a position of leadership, take this to heart. The people under you are not empty vessels. They just need the right environment, the right teaching, and the right kind of belief. A great leader brings out the best in people. A bad leader convinces them they have no best to give.
So if you ever feel dumb, useless, or out of place, pause. Maybe it’s not you. Maybe you’re just in the wrong hands.
That’s all my talk for today. Till my next mail, stay employed!
