Yes, yes. I know what I said
I read a story of someone who made a humbling but responsible decision when her business began to fail. She decided to look for a full-time job to ensure stability for her children.
She got an offer, but it was less than she needed. Given the uncertain times and her situation, she couldn’t push too hard on negotiations.
So she began. The company had some issues that she was hired to fix. The major one was some project that had been stuck for two years.
Stay with me; I’m getting to the point of my story.
During her first management meeting, she volunteered to lead the project. By the next month, they were live on the project.
Imagine that. A problem that had been dragging on for two years was solved in just one month. It was a great way to show her value and steeze right from the start.
With these and other improvements under her belt, she asked for a raise a few months later. They agreed without hesitation.
Even better, a few months after that, she got another raise without even asking. In less than a year, she got two raises and ended up earning much more than she initially asked for.
This wasn't because the company was generous. It was because she demonstrated that she deserved it by solving big problems.
And that's the takeaway I want to share with you. Solving big problems leads to big rewards.
Be a problem solver, and you'll be well compensated for it.
Personally, I’ve been in two jobs where I got multiple raises without even asking to ask. Yes, in this same Nigeria.
No one’s going to pay you more for doing the exact job you were hired to do. You have to offer more.
And one more thing: don't let a low starting pay stop you from doing great work.
When you consistently deliver quality, people will trust you with more significant, higher-value tasks, which opens up better opportunities and higher pay.

MY ADVICE
Give yourself some credit. If you are as good as you think you are, of course your boss appreciates you, and may treat you better than your peers not because of looks or anything. After all, we as human beings, are more inclined to things that give value. As long as he hasn’t outrightly professed any odd intentions to you or isn’t acting unseemly, I think you should believe in your abilities and yourself more. Ofcourse, you can be cautious but there is a very high chance it’s a harmless affair.
