Pink used to be most girls favorite colour, what happened?
Someone on the internet said, “If you like pink as an adult, it’s because your inner girl child has healed.”
And it made me pause. Because I didn’t even realize we now all hated pink.
We were now all about black, beige, and I’m not that kind of girl. Somewhere between growing up and trying to be taken seriously, we abandoned softness.
We told our inner girls to calm down, toughen up, and act right.
We started hiding parts of ourselves that were “too girly” or “too emotional.”
From primary school teachers to aunties at family functions, everybody seemed to be on a mission to humble us.
Somewhere along the line, we all learned to pack up our sparkles and become serious women.
The ones who don’t laugh too loudly, don’t wear bright colors to work, and definitely don’t believe in fairytales anymore.
But recently, I’ve been thinking, what happened to that girl?
The one who used to reenact Barbie in front of a mirror?
Who used to write love letters to imaginary crushes?
Who believed she could be anything.
So this is me writing for her.
Dear inner girl,
I know life has done things. A lot has humbled you. Men have shown you pepper. Work has stretched you. And adulthood? Adulthood has been doing its own on your mental health.
But listen, you still deserve softness. You still deserve joy. You still deserve to play.
Healing doesn’t always look like therapy or meditation. Sometimes, it’s you choosing the pink items even though people will talk.
Sometimes, it’s saying no to that let’s go with the flow situationship. Sometimes, it’s resting when your body says stop, even if your to-do list is screaming otherwise.
Because that little girl inside you? She’s still here.
She just wants to know it’s safe to come out again.
So if you see me these days wearing pink, eating cake for breakfast, or laughing like I don’t have deadlines, mind your business. 😌
It’s not unseriousness. It’s recovery.
Here’s to healing that inner girl who wanted to be loved, seen, and celebrated not for what she did, but for who she is.
Happy International Day of the Girl Child in advance💖
