Work no dey ever finish
If we really look at it
Top insults I’m scared of being attributed with.
Old glory.
Imagine always introducing yourself as the person who did that one cool thing one time in 2004.
Let me put it simply for you. Wins expire.
One of the most difficult things I had to wrap my head around when I started as my career was the concept of TWY. Or, as normal people like to put it,
"That Was Yesterday."
Let's say you spend so much time working on a project. You toil, grind and give it your all. And at the end of the day...
You succeed! You did the thing and you did it well. The crowd goes wild, your bosses love you and even your clients are like, "You know what? That was pretty badass.'
You're a legend forever.
Except that's not true; you're just a legend, for that day. Or at most, that week.
Why? A new challenge will come tomorrow that will require you to prove yourself all over again.
And when you try to point out how brilliant you already are, do you know what life will say? 'That was yesterday.
It sucks to accept that a win is not an infinite pass, but instead is an asset with a 'best before' date.
It feels unfair because you worked so hard. It took blood sweat and tears. And now you have to top that again?
The truth is we have to; because the alternative is actually more terrifying - a world where the best work you've ever done is BEHIND you.
Before you know it… your best work is receding further into history with every day that passes.
That's not right.
The mindset of always bringing your A game is essential for living your best life. You're not doing this to please your employer or shine at work. This is for you, to make a name and make that money. Who knows? Maybe years even after that current job.
When Apple announced the iPhone in 2007, they were years ahead of the competition in features.
But none of this would have mattered if Apple had stopped there.
Instead, they pushed themselves every year after that to make the next iPhone the best. They haven't always succeeded. So yes, wins expire. But we must not see this as a bad thing!
We must see this as a challenge to aim for a win so big, it will outlive us.
Have I been able to inspire you today?

Everyone at work keeps resigning and I keep feeling like maybe I’m the one not moving forward in life. The sun keeps rising and the seasons are passing faster every year. I just feel like life is passing me by. Literally all the people I met at that company have left me there and even the ones that came after me. I’m comfortable with the salary, but is this me being comfortable with mediocrity?
MY ADVICE
We can't insult ourselves by comparing with anyone else. We are unique individuals. You should respect this fact and be a little more kind to yourself.
When your competition becomes you, there's no question of losing. It's always a win-win situation. But you also have to be careful about being too comfortable in your current state. And that’s a question you might just have to answer yourself.
